About Illuminated Thinking | Specialist Psychology in Glasgow
We are a specialist psychology practice based in Glasgow, offering therapy, psychological assessments, and medico-legal services delivered by HCPC-registered doctoral-level clinical psychologists. Whether you are looking for support with trauma, anxiety, depression, or a complex combination of difficulties, our team brings the depth and expertise you deserve.
A Specialist Psychology Practice Built on Clinical Integrity
Illuminated Thinking was founded in 2020 by Dr Aisha Tariq, a doctoral-level clinical psychologist with a clear vision: to create a practice where specialist psychological care is delivered with discretion, depth, and unwavering clinical integrity.
We are not a therapy marketplace or a directory of loosely affiliated practitioners. Illuminated Thinking is a cohesive clinical team, carefully selected and led by Dr Tariq as Clinical Director. Our psychologists hold doctorates and are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). We also work with accredited therapists, counselling psychologists, and supervised trainees, each registered with the appropriate professional body for their discipline. This means you receive a level of expertise, accountability, and clinical governance that goes well beyond what many private therapy services can offer.
Our mission is straightforward: provide the highest standard of psychological care in a setting that feels safe, personal, and genuinely collaborative. We believe that quality matters, and that people seeking psychological support deserve to work with clinicians who have the training and experience to make a real difference.
What Makes Clinical Psychologists Different from Counsellors and Therapists
When seeking psychological support, the range of titles can be confusing. Counsellors, therapists, psychotherapists, and psychologists all offer forms of talking therapy, but there are important differences in training, scope, and regulation that are worth understanding before you make a choice.
Clinical psychologists complete a minimum of six years of university-level training, including a three-year doctoral programme accredited by the HCPC. This training covers the full range of psychological difficulties across the lifespan, from common problems such as anxiety and low mood to severe and complex presentations including trauma disorders, personality difficulties, psychosis, and neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD and autism.
As HCPC-registered practitioners, clinical psychologists are trained to work at the level of psychological formulation, building an individualised understanding of why you are struggling, not just what you are struggling with. This formulation draws on psychological theory and research, and it shapes every aspect of your treatment. Rather than applying a single therapeutic model to every client, clinical psychologists can draw flexibly on multiple evidence-based approaches, including CBT, EMDR, ACT, Schema Therapy, and Compassion-Focused Therapy.
Counsellors and therapists provide valuable support, and many people benefit greatly from counselling. However, the scope of practice is typically narrower, with shorter training pathways and, in many cases, no statutory regulation. For people dealing with more complex, severe, or co-occurring difficulties, working with a clinical psychologist ensures you have access to the full breadth of clinical expertise.
At Illuminated Thinking, every member of our team is a doctoral-level clinical psychologist. This is a deliberate choice that reflects our commitment to offering specialist-level care from the very first session.
Our Formulation-Led, Blended Approach to Therapy
We do not believe in one-size-fits-all therapy. Before any treatment begins, your psychologist will work with you to develop a detailed psychological formulation. This is a shared understanding of your difficulties, their origins, and the factors keeping them going. This formulation is the foundation of everything that follows.
Because our psychologists are trained across multiple therapeutic models, we can blend approaches to match what the evidence and your formulation suggest will be most helpful for you. This might include:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for structured, goal-oriented work on thought patterns and behaviours
- Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) for trauma processing
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for building psychological flexibility and values-led living
- Schema Therapy for deeply rooted patterns and relational difficulties
- Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) for persistent self-criticism and shame
- Internal Family Systems (IFS) for working with different parts of the self
This blended, formulation-led approach means your therapy is tailored precisely to your needs rather than constrained by a single model. It also means that if something is not working, we have the flexibility to adapt and draw on other approaches without referring you elsewhere.

Glasgow Consulting Rooms and Online Therapy
Our consulting rooms are located at Mearns Castle Golf Academy, Glasgow, providing a private, comfortable, and easily accessible setting for face-to-face therapy and assessment sessions.
We also offer secure video therapy sessions for clients who prefer to work remotely or who live outside of Glasgow. Our online therapy service is available to clients across the United Kingdom and provides the same specialist-level care as our in-person sessions.
Whether you choose to see us in person or online, you will receive the same thorough, formulation-led approach from one of our doctoral psychologists.

Trainee Placements and Free Therapy Access
As part of our commitment to the future of clinical psychology, Illuminated Thinking offers trainee clinical psychologist placements. Trainees on placement with us work under close supervision from our qualified clinical psychologists, gaining experience in specialist psychological assessment and therapy.
These placements also create a pathway for free therapy access. Clients seen by our trainee psychologists receive high-quality psychological therapy at no cost, supervised by experienced members of our team. This allows us to widen access to specialist psychological support for people who might not otherwise be able to afford private therapy.
If you are interested in a trainee placement or would like to find out more about accessing free therapy through our training programme, please get in touch.
