Person-Centred Counselling in Glasgow

Illuminated Thinking offers person-centred counselling in Glasgow, provided by registered therapists within our clinical team. Person-centred counselling provides a warm, non-judgmental space to explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace, with a therapist who listens deeply and follows your lead. In person and online.

What Person-Centred Counselling Is

Person-centred counselling was developed by the psychologist Carl Rogers in the mid-twentieth century. It is built on a simple but powerful idea: that people have an innate capacity to grow and heal, given the right conditions.

Those conditions are at the heart of the approach. Your counsellor offers three core qualities:

  • Empathy: a genuine effort to understand your experience from your perspective, not just intellectually but emotionally
  • Congruence: being real and authentic with you, rather than hiding behind a professional mask
  • Unconditional positive regard: accepting you without judgment, no matter what you bring to the room

Person-centred counselling is not directive. Your counsellor will not set homework, teach techniques, or tell you what to do. Instead, they follow your lead. The focus is on creating a relationship in which you feel safe enough to explore whatever matters to you, at whatever pace feels right.

Who Person-Centred Counselling Helps

Person-centred counselling suits people who want space to think, feel, and be heard. It is not about fixing a specific problem, though problems often shift as a result of the process.

You might find person-centred counselling helpful if you are:

  • Going through grief or loss and want somewhere to process your feelings without being rushed
  • Navigating a life transition such as a career change, relationship ending, or becoming a parent
  • Feeling stuck, low, or disconnected but not sure why
  • Wanting to understand yourself better and explore questions about identity, values, or direction
  • Looking for emotional support that is gentle and unhurried rather than structured and goal-focused

Some people come to counselling knowing exactly what they want to talk about. Others arrive feeling uncertain. Both are fine. The process unfolds naturally.

How It Differs from Psychology and CBT

Person-centred counselling and approaches like CBT or Schema Therapy are quite different in how they work, though both have value.

CBT and other psychological therapies tend to be more structured. They involve identifying specific patterns in your thinking and behaviour and working to change them. There are often techniques to practise between sessions and clear goals to work towards. This can be very effective, particularly for difficulties like anxiety, OCD, or depression where specific patterns are maintaining the problem.

Person-centred counselling takes a different path. It is not about changing your thoughts or learning techniques. It is about being truly heard and understood. The therapeutic relationship itself is the vehicle for change. For many people, the experience of being accepted without judgment, perhaps for the first time, allows something to shift internally.

Neither approach is better than the other. They serve different needs. Some people benefit from the structure and evidence base of psychological therapies. Others need the openness and warmth of a person-centred approach. And some benefit from both at different points. At Illuminated Thinking, we can help you find what suits you best.

Frequently Asked Questions About Person-Centred Counselling in Glasgow

Is counselling the same as therapy?
The terms are often used interchangeably, and there is significant overlap. In general, counselling tends to be more exploratory and client-led, while psychological therapy may involve more structured techniques and interventions. At Illuminated Thinking, our person-centred counsellors create a space for you to explore your experiences at your own pace. If it becomes clear that a more structured approach would be helpful, we can discuss options including CBT, Schema Therapy, or other evidence-based therapies within our team.
How long does person-centred counselling last?
There is no set number of sessions. Some people find that a short period of counselling, perhaps 6 to 12 sessions, gives them what they need. Others benefit from continuing for longer, particularly if they are working through grief, a major life change, or longstanding patterns. We review how things are going together and you are always in control of when to end.
Can I switch to psychology if I need more structured support?
Yes. One of the advantages of working within a multidisciplinary team is that we can adapt. If you begin with person-centred counselling and it becomes clear that a more structured approach such as CBT or Schema Therapy would be beneficial, we can discuss a referral to one of our psychologists. Your counsellor will talk this through with you openly and support the transition.
Is person-centred counselling available online?
Yes. We offer person-centred counselling via secure video sessions as well as in person at our Glasgow consulting rooms. Many people find that online counselling feels natural and comfortable, particularly when the focus is on talking and being heard. Learn more about our online therapy service.
