Neuropsychological Assessment in Glasgow

Illuminated Thinking provides specialist neuropsychological assessments in Glasgow, delivered by HCPC-registered clinical psychologists and neuropsychologists. We assess cognitive functioning following brain injury, neurological conditions, stroke, and other causes of cognitive change. Every assessment includes a comprehensive written report with clear, practical recommendations.

What a neuropsychological assessment can tell you

A neuropsychological assessment provides a detailed picture of how your brain is functioning across different cognitive domains. It goes beyond what a standard medical assessment can offer. Where an MRI shows structure, a neuropsychological assessment shows function: how well you can concentrate, remember, plan, solve problems, process information, and use language.

This matters because cognitive difficulties are not always visible on a scan. After a brain injury or neurological event, someone can have a normal MRI but still struggle significantly with everyday tasks. A neuropsychological assessment captures those difficulties, explains them, and provides a foundation for support, rehabilitation, or workplace adjustments.

Conditions and referral reasons we assess

Our neuropsychological assessment service covers a wide range of referral questions, including:

  • Traumatic brain injury, from mild concussion through to severe injury, at any stage of recovery
  • Stroke, including assessment of cognitive impact and rehabilitation planning
  • Epilepsy, particularly where there are concerns about memory or the cognitive effects of medication
  • Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and other progressive neurological conditions
  • Functional neurological disorder (FND) and non-epileptic seizures
  • Concerns about cognitive decline or early-onset dementia
  • Post-surgical cognitive change, including after neurosurgery or cardiac surgery
  • Medico-legal and occupational assessments where detailed cognitive evidence is needed

If you are unsure whether your situation fits, please get in touch. We are happy to have a conversation before you commit to anything.

What the assessment process looks like

We know that the idea of cognitive testing can feel daunting. Our approach is thorough but also calm, well-paced, and designed to put you at ease.

  1. Initial conversation. We start by understanding your background, your concerns, and what you are hoping the assessment will clarify. This helps us select the right combination of tests.
  2. Cognitive testing. You will complete a series of tasks that measure different aspects of brain function. These are not pass-or-fail tests. They are carefully designed tools that help us understand your cognitive profile, including your strengths as well as any areas of difficulty.
  3. Report. Your psychologist writes a comprehensive report that explains the findings in clear, accessible language. The report includes a summary of your cognitive strengths and weaknesses, diagnostic conclusions where appropriate, and practical recommendations for support, rehabilitation, workplace adjustments, or further investigation.
  4. Feedback session. We meet with you (and a family member or carer, if you wish) to talk through the results, answer questions, and discuss next steps. We take as long as you need with this.

Frequently Asked Questions About Neuropsychological Assessment in Glasgow

What does a neuropsychological assessment involve?
A neuropsychological assessment involves a combination of clinical interview and standardised cognitive tests. These tests measure specific areas of brain function including memory, attention, processing speed, language, executive function, and visuospatial skills. The assessment is not a single test but a carefully selected battery tailored to your referral question. You will also receive a detailed written report with findings and recommendations.
How long does a neuropsychological assessment take?
Most neuropsychological assessments take between 3 and 6 hours of face-to-face testing, which may be spread across one or two sessions depending on your stamina and needs. We build in breaks and work at your pace. The written report is usually available within 3 to 4 weeks, followed by a feedback session to talk through the results together.
Who might need a neuropsychological assessment?
Neuropsychological assessments are helpful for people experiencing cognitive difficulties following brain injury, stroke, or neurological conditions such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson's disease. They are also used to investigate concerns about memory or cognitive decline, to clarify diagnostic questions, to support rehabilitation planning, and to provide evidence for medico-legal or occupational purposes.
Can a neuropsychological assessment be done online?
Some components, such as the clinical interview and feedback session, can be conducted via secure video. However, the cognitive testing itself is best done in person to ensure accurate and valid results. We carry out testing at our Glasgow consulting rooms. If you are unable to attend in person, please get in touch and we can discuss your options.
